Part 1 · Band 9 Sample Answer

The scatter plot compares per-capita energy use, measured in megawatt-hours, with sustainability ratings on a ten-point scale across six countries in 2022. A fitted line indicates the general relationship between the variables.

Overall, there is a pronounced negative association: every successive increase in energy consumption corresponds to a lower sustainability score. Country A combines the least energy-intensive lifestyle with the highest rating, while Country F occupies the opposite extreme. No country departs substantially from the overall pattern.

At the lower-consumption end, Country A uses just under 4 MWh per person annually and records a sustainability index of approximately 8.5. Country B consumes nearly 6 MWh and scores around 7.8. Country C is situated close to 8 MWh, with its rating falling to roughly 6.8. These three countries all lie slightly above the trend line, although the gap is most noticeable for A and B.

The remaining nations consume considerably more energy and achieve lower scores. Country D uses a little over 11 MWh per capita, almost three times the figure for A, while registering a sustainability rating of about 6.0. Consumption then rises to approximately 14 MWh in Country E as the index drops to 4.8. Finally, Country F has the highest energy use, at around 17 MWh, and the lowest score, just below 4.0. Thus, from A to F, consumption increases by roughly 13 MWh per person while sustainability declines by about 4.5 points.

The chart illustrates the relationship between annual energy consumption per person and sustainability index scores in six countries during 2022. Energy use is given in MWh, while sustainability is rated from zero to ten.

Overall, countries with higher levels of energy consumption consistently have lower sustainability scores. Country A performs best on the index and uses the least energy, whereas Country F has both the greatest consumption and the weakest sustainability result. The six observations remain close to the downward trend line.

Country A consumes slightly below 4 MWh per capita and has the highest sustainability score, at about 8.5. Energy use is higher in Country B, at almost 6 MWh, while its index stands at roughly 7.8. Country C occupies the middle of the lower-consumption group, using around 8 MWh and receiving a score of approximately 6.8.

Among the other three countries, D records annual consumption of just over 11 MWh per person and a sustainability rating of around 6.0. Country E uses approximately 14 MWh, which is about 3 MWh more than D, but scores only 4.8. At the furthest end of the chart, Country F consumes close to 17 MWh and records a sustainability figure of about 3.9. Its energy use is therefore more than four times that of Country A, while its index score is over four points lower. Overall, the rankings of the six nations by the two measures are almost exactly reversed.

Overall, there is a clear negative relationship between the two measures. Countries that consume more energy per person have lower sustainability scores. Country A has the lowest consumption and the highest index result, while Country F has the highest energy use and the lowest score.

Country A uses just under 4 MWh of energy per person and achieves a sustainability score of about 8.5. Country B consumes nearly 6 MWh, with a lower score of approximately 7.8. The figures for Country C are around 8 MWh and 6.8 respectively. Therefore, even among the three countries with lower energy consumption, the sustainability index falls as energy use increases.

Write about the following topic:

Some philosophers and scientists, considering the long-term survival of humanity, argue that our greatest ethical imperative is to become a multi-planetary species. They contend that confining all of humanity to Earth makes us vulnerable to extinction from a single catastrophe (asteroid, pandemic, nuclear war) and that space colonisation is the ultimate act of responsibility. Others argue that this ‘cosmic hedge’ is a dangerous distraction from solving Earth’s pressing problems, consumes resources needed for sustainability, and may merely export our destructive tendencies to other worlds.

Discuss both views and give your own opinion.

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

BAND 9

Part 2 · Band 9 Sample Answer

Establishing self-sustaining communities beyond Earth is sometimes presented as a duty to future generations. Advocates regard geographical separation as insurance against extinction, while critics see an expensive escape fantasy that neglects suffering on our planet. In my view, multi-planetary civilisation is a legitimate long-term objective, but not humanity’s greatest present ethical imperative. It should complement efforts to make Earth resilient.

The case for expansion into space rests on sound risk management. However unlikely an asteroid impact, engineered pandemic or global war may be, concentrating an entire species in one location means that a sufficiently severe event could end its history. An independent settlement would preserve human knowledge, culture and biological continuity. The necessary research could also generate earlier benefits. Closed-loop systems for recycling water, producing food with few resources and generating clean energy would be useful in isolated or environmentally stressed regions on Earth. Refusing all investment because the reward is distant might therefore impose an irreversible risk on future people.

Nevertheless, this insurance argument is often exaggerated. For decades, an extraterrestrial settlement would depend on Earth for equipment and expertise, so it would not offer protection from every terrestrial catastrophe. Meanwhile, climate instability, nuclear conflict and infectious disease can be reduced now. Strengthening public health, protecting ecosystems and improving international security are more direct ways to preserve civilisation than reproducing it in a hostile environment. A narrative of escape may even weaken commitment to these measures by suggesting that environmental destruction is avoidable.

Critics are also right to question what social order would be carried into space. Colonisation led by powerful states or corporations could reproduce inequality, exploitation and political domination. Other environments may also possess scientific value or life deserving protection. Expansion cannot be responsible unless international rules govern ownership, labour rights, contamination and resource use.

Governments should therefore support planetary defence, robotic exploration and research into closed ecological systems, while directing far greater immediate effort towards keeping Earth habitable. Any settlement programme should meet standards of scientific value, environmental care and fair governance rather than being justified by prestige.

In conclusion, becoming multi-planetary could eventually reduce existential risk and deserves sustained research. However, treating it as the supreme priority confuses a distant safeguard with urgent responsibility. Humanity will be fit to inhabit other worlds only if it demonstrates the capacity to manage technology, conflict and shared resources responsibly on this one.

Part 2 · Band 8 Sample Answer

Some thinkers believe that humanity must settle other planets to avoid extinction, while others argue that this ambition wastes resources and avoids urgent responsibilities on Earth. I accept that space settlement could provide long-term protection, but it should not take priority over making this planet safer and more sustainable.

Supporters of colonisation highlight a genuine risk. Humanity currently lives on one planet, so an extreme event affecting the whole Earth could destroy civilisation. A separate and self-sufficient population would ensure that an asteroid impact, nuclear conflict or new disease did not eliminate the entire species. Space programmes can also produce knowledge with practical uses. Technologies developed to recycle water, grow food in restricted environments and generate energy efficiently could help communities facing shortages on Earth. In addition, exploration satisfies human curiosity and may yield scientific discoveries that cannot be predicted in advance.

However, a colony would not become independent quickly. Early settlements would probably rely on supplies, specialised equipment and expertise from Earth. They might therefore fail if a global catastrophe destroyed the systems supporting them. In contrast, investment in disease monitoring, nuclear risk reduction and environmental protection can reduce threats immediately for billions of people. Spending enormous sums on distant settlements while people lack clean water, healthcare or protection from extreme weather would also be difficult to justify ethically.

There is a further risk that the promise of another home could weaken the effort to protect the present one. Earth is far more suitable for human life than any planet currently available to us, even after serious environmental damage. Treating space as an escape route may encourage the mistaken belief that natural resources here do not need careful management. Moreover, if settlement is controlled by a few governments or wealthy companies, existing inequalities and competition for resources may simply be transferred into space. New rules would be required to prevent exploitation and environmental contamination.

In my opinion, space research should continue, but within clear limits. Public investment should focus on scientific missions, detecting dangerous asteroids and developing technologies that benefit both space travel and sustainability. At the same time, most resources intended to protect humanity should address threats on Earth. International agreements should govern any future settlement and ensure that it is not controlled solely for commercial or national advantage.

In conclusion, becoming multi-planetary may eventually protect humanity against extinction, and abandoning space research would be unwise. Nevertheless, Earth remains our only practical home, so solving its environmental, political and social problems is the more urgent ethical responsibility.

BAND 7

Part 2 · Band 7 Sample Answer

Some argue that humans have a duty to establish settlements on other planets because remaining only on Earth creates a risk of extinction. Others believe space colonisation would take resources away from serious problems at home. In my opinion, becoming a multi-planetary species is a valuable long-term aim, but protecting Earth should remain the first priority.

Those supporting space colonisation point out that a single major disaster could affect the whole planet. A large asteroid, nuclear war or extremely dangerous disease might destroy modern civilisation or even the human species. If an independent population existed elsewhere, humanity could survive such an event. Preparing for settlement could also lead to useful inventions. People living in space would need to recycle water, produce food efficiently and obtain energy without wasting resources. These technologies could later help regions on Earth that face environmental difficulties.

However, there are several weaknesses in this argument. A settlement on another planet would initially depend heavily on Earth for machines, medicine and trained workers. It would therefore provide limited protection for a long time. Space colonisation would also be extremely difficult and expensive, while many current dangers can be reduced more directly. Governments can improve healthcare systems, prevent nuclear conflict and invest in clean energy now. These measures would protect far more people in the near future.

Opponents are also concerned that the idea of leaving Earth may reduce the motivation to care for it. No nearby planet offers conditions as suitable for human life as this one. It would be irresponsible to damage Earth while imagining that large populations could simply move elsewhere. Human societies might also take their existing problems with them. Competition between countries, unfair control by wealthy organisations and careless use of resources could all continue on another planet.

I believe governments should maintain a reasonable level of space research because it improves scientific knowledge and may protect future generations. Research into asteroid detection and life-support systems is particularly worthwhile. Nevertheless, spending on space settlement should not reduce essential investment in climate action, public health or poverty reduction. Countries should also agree on international rules before colonies are created, including rules about ownership, environmental protection and the rights of settlers.

In conclusion, spreading humanity across several planets could reduce the danger of total extinction in the distant future. However, it is not a replacement for solving problems on Earth. A balanced policy should continue careful space research while placing immediate human welfare and the sustainability of our present planet first.
