Four sections. One overall band.

01
Add the four section bands.

Listening, Reading, Writing, and Speaking each contribute one section score.

02
Divide the total by four.

This gives the average before the final IELTS half-band rounding rule is applied.

03
Round to the nearest whole or half band.

An average ending in .25 rounds up to the next half band; an average ending in .75 rounds up to the next whole band.

How is the IELTS overall band score calculated?
Add your Listening, Reading, Writing, and Speaking bands, divide the total by four, then apply IELTS half-band rounding.
What happens if my average is 6.25 or 6.75?
An average of 6.25 becomes 6.5. An average of 6.75 becomes 7.0.
Is Listening scored the same in Academic and General Training?
Yes. Listening uses the same test and the same scoring approach in IELTS Academic and IELTS General Training.
Why are Academic and General Training Reading conversions different?
Both use the 9-band scale, but the Reading papers differ. General Training typically requires more correct answers to reach the same band at several score levels.
Can this page calculate my Writing band?
Writing needs a real response to assess Task Achievement or Task Response, Coherence and Cohesion, Lexical Resource, and Grammatical Range and Accuracy. Use the Auvoxi Writing Checker for a Quick Report.
Can this page calculate my Speaking band?
Speaking needs an actual performance across Fluency and Coherence, Lexical Resource, Grammatical Range and Accuracy, and Pronunciation. Use the Speaking Simulator from your Auvoxi Dashboard to practise a full session.
